a - always 'ah' as in 'gather', never 'uh' as in 'alone.'
c - has 'ts' sound as in 'tsar' or 'lots.'
č - 'ch' as in 'chop' or 'chin'.
ć - somewhat like ‘?’ but harder, as the 't' in 'actuary' or 'amateur'
dj - like 'dge' in 'fudge'--softer than standard 'j'
g - always hard, as in 'got'; never soft as in 'gem'
j - always has 'i' or 'y' value, as in German 'Ja'.
lj - like 'li' in ‘collier'
nj - like 'ny' in 'canyon'.
r - always rolled, or flipped off the tongue, like the Russian 'r'.
š - 'sh' sound as in 'shop'.
ž - hard 'zh' sound like the 's' in 'pleasure' or 'leisure'.
